NORSE CULTURE Course

WANT TO JOIN FORN SIÐr?

Are you a Norðmann who has lost touch with his identity? Or do you simply want to learn the real Norse culture and history, without the typical revisionist bullshit? This course covers everything you need to know about Norse lore, traditions, customs, culture and history. Completion of this course is also required in order to become a member of Forn Siðr.

Note: The entire content of this course is also included in the Hirðmaðr training course.

COURSE ORGANIZATION

The Forneskja course is entirely completed online at your own pace. The course is organized in 8 main sections: Norrœnt mál (Old Norse language), Eddur (The Eddas), Íslendingasögur (The Sagas), Frædi (Norse History), Seiðr (Norse Magic), Forneskja (Norse Lore), Siðir (Norse Customs), and Víkingarnir (The Vikings). 


WHAT'S COVERED IN THE FORNESKJA COURSE


Vér erum menn (We are men)

Norse culture is a warrior culture, and thus, focused on men. This introductory section looks at the differences between men and women as a matter of biology and innate behavior.


NORRŒNT MÁL (OLD NORSE LANGUAGE)

Introduction to the fundamentals of norrœnt mál (Old Norse language) as well as Rök (Runes from the Norwegian variation of the Younger Futhark in use during the Viking age). 


EDDUR (THE EDDAS)

Review of the HávamálKonungsbók Eddukvæða (Poetic Edda), as well as Snorra Edda (The Prose Edda), translated into a decent English version.


ÍSLENDINGASÖGUR (the sagas)

Access to all the Íslendingasögur (Sagas of Icelanders) that have been translated into (an acceptable version of) English. 


Fræði (Norse History)

Norse history, ancient manuscripts, poems, and culture (Old Norse and Icelandic texts translated into English). 


Seiðr (NORSE Magic)

Brief overview of Norse magic, normally the realm of the feminine. 


Frœtði (NORSE LORE)

Fundamentals about the Norse lore, including Æsir (Norse gods associated with war), Ásynjur (Norse goddesses associated with war), Vanir (Norse gods and goddesses associated with peace), Jötnar (Giants), Aðrir (other deities), Kindir (creatures), Kynja (species) and Níu Heimar (The Nine Homeworlds aka Yggdrasil). 


SIÐIR (NORSE CUSTOMS)

Basics of Norse culture. This includes the main helgar (Norse Festivals), Norse/Icelandic traditions, sǫngr (Norse Music), orðskviðir (Viking Proverbs), how to make glögg and mjoðr (mead), and fullrettirsorð (how to swear like a Viking). Finally, all this is followed by a carefully selected movie to give you an idea of Viking life. 


VÍkingARNIR (THE VIKINGS)

Basics about Norse culture, as it relates specifically to Víkingar. This includes the Víkinga Lǫg, glíma (traditional Norse grappling), hólmgöngur (traditional Norse duels), rígr (social structure), eiðr (Norse Oaths), jafnaðr (Norse justice), blanda (sexuality), nafn (the Old Norse naming system), dauði (deaths and rituals), yfir (afterlife where people go when not to Valhöll), hervápn (traditional Viking weapons), Berserkir and Úlfhéðnar (the best Viking warriors), and of course the myth of shield maidens. You can also watch several carefully selected documentaries to get a better understanding of the materials.


NÓREGR (Modern Norway)

NEW SECTION (added April 2022)! It is expected to cover facts about modern Norway and society, and how Norway remains the best country in the world worth saving, particularly in the context of the west and western civilization slowly collapsing.


GØRA (JOURNEYS)

Travel Scandinavia and learn about the most significant sights and ancestral trading routes, from the Hurtigruten historic Norwegian Coastal Express route from Kirkenes (near Russian border) to Bergen and the famous Trollfjorden, to Lofoten, the Faroe Islands, or the maritime route between Oslo and København.


COURSE OUTCOME

Upon completion of this course, you will have learned the fundamentals of Norse lore and ancestral culture. You will also qualify for membership in Forn Siðr.
